Colors

Colors are part of life and they add so much to an image. Colors often represent many different things such as patriotic pride through the colors in a flag, passion and support for various sports teams, informing drivers when to stop, go, or yield, etc. For this reason, it is important for you to know the colors in Spanish and their correct spelling in order to use them properly.

The following are the colors in Spanish:

Main Colors

        Blanco (White)

     Negro (Black)

      Azul (Blue)

       Amarillo (Yellow)

      Verde (Green)

      Rojo (Red)

Secondary Colors

Naranja / Anaranjado (Orange)

Rosado (Pink)

Gris (Gray)

 Celeste (Light Blue)

Turquesa (Turquoise)

Púrpura (Purple)

Marrón (Brown)

Additional Information on Colors

In English, you can add additional adjectives such as light and dark in front of colors to provide a more specific description of the color. The same concept exists in Spanish grammar; however, in Spanish, the additional adjective comes AFTER the color. In Spanish, the additions are:

  Claro (Light)

 Oscuro (Dark)

Examples:

Mi pelo es marrón oscuro

     My hair is dark brown

El cielo es azul claro.

     The sky is light blue

Colors Gender

In previous lessons, you learned that in Spanish both nouns and articles have "genders" and therefore can be feminine or masculine. Colors work in a similar way. We will look at this concept in more detail later in the adjectives lesson. In the meantime, simply memorize the following colors that we studied today, which change based on the gender of the noun (colors not found in the table below remain the same regardless of gender).

Feminine Masculine
Blanca -- Blanco
Negra -- Negro
Amarilla -- Amarillo
Roja -- Rojo
Anaranjada -- Anaranjado

Examples:

Mi pelo es rojo

     My hair is red.

La casa es blanca.

     The house is white.
